When you decide enough darkness you cannot live this way so you book trips and to keep it affordable it will be complicated. You sleep 90 minutes then drive from Meadville to Cleveland at midnight and stand in lines for hours and board planes and sleep in 45 minutes snaps on planes and wait for delayed planes and go to lunch in Nassau where the sun emerges for a few moments and you think thank god we came all this way but this is a ruse. You and your 16-year-old traveling companion board a small plane and you don’t check bags as a religion and you packed light but one of you looks amazing in anything while the other lifts weights to stave off under arm fat creep-a trench warfare of aging.
Meanwhile the pilot in Freeport taxis into the terminal at mock speed perhaps the ubiquitous Wendy’s here in the Bahamas is about to close and he NEEDs a frosty. Then after 21 hrs of travel and like 4 hrs of interrupted travel sleep, Margo realizes her birthday cash has been stolen from the bag we decided to check in Nassau though we never check bags but hauling them to lunch seemed insane, and then I’m reminding (told later I was yelling and blaming) that people don’t listen when I give instructions about where and how to pack things and now look what’s happened! There’s crying and phone calls and texting and then my dad discovers a small box of jewelry and cash in the trash can in his office. It was never packed. Delirious Margo threw out the wrong box it was probably a few hours from the burn pile. Crises over, the roller coaster of emotions at reality tv levels and puffy eyes and we just arrived.
After a nights rest we discover it’s windy and rainy and the forecasters have removed the little suns and here is what we get we’ve packed bikinis and snorkels and you walk around in a hoody and rain jacket and take your vitamin D pills for your 1st world pity party. You eat pancakes and try to break open coconuts and play broken shuffleboard. One of you packed 3 bikinis but did not pack a rain jacket despite being advised it’s a best practice. So here you are. 3 bikinis in the rain.
I love your writing, your turn of a phrase. From another post, I know you work but I have no idea of what kind of work. Have you ever considered a blog or a column about the adventures of living on an island & being a ‘fixer-upper’? Even a weekly column would be wonderful. How about a local newspaper or an online blog? Just something to think about.
