I reading this after spending the early afternoon with my husband and two friends at the NO KINGS RALLY at the Colorado State Capital in Denver! It was HOT, 91 degrees just before noon. I don't know how many people joined. It was a great turnout. And there were numerous protests all over the Denver metro area and several cities and small towns in Colorado.
It was a peaceful, joyful rally. The signs were smart and funny. And I only saw one motorcycle policeman. He was blocking an intersection along the parade route to keep traffic away during the march. We saw him give directions to people who asked him a couple of times. Then he rode off.
That’s a perfect protest day! I attended a small rally in our local farm town next door to our island with just about a hundred protestors. If committed to a graduation party so couldn’t trek to Seattle. It was wonderful to see people out, be a part of a larger movement and represent.
I hope as today winds down violence remains minimal on both sides. I just saw a report of protestors being shot in Utah and hoping everyone survives.
My husband was upset that the rallies in Colorado didn't get much news coverage. The lead story last night was probably about the anti ICE protesters who tried to gain access to the interstate, I-25. The police stopped the with teargas, as far as I know, no rubber bullets were fired. The incident happened about 6 pm, long after the NO KINGS RALLY dispersed.
A great piece, Amy! I wish I could say that your stark warning about the mid-terms is without merit, but that is clearly where we are heading. Best case is that the courts will take away his control of the National Guard next week. But events this weekend could well be the tipping point! God help us.
Heather Cox Richardson, tonight: “The First Continental Congress, which met in 1774, refused to establish a standing army, afraid that a bad government could use an army against its people.”
Very well stated Amy. I’m restacking. It’s absolutely critical that we get that 70% of veterans who oppose the parade to start protesting big time along with millions of citizens. When a US Senator can be forcibly removed from a press conference, forced to the ground and handcuffed, as he stated, NO ONE IS SAFE! We are at a critical inflection point. See you at NO KINGS, NO DICTATORS, NO BULLSHIT!🇺🇸

Ya the news loves to focus on minor incidents of violence. A peaceful protest isn’t very sensational.
Power to the People! Power to the people! Right On! John Lennon

This week things are moving at breakneck speed. If people aren’t worried it’s because they aren’t educated enough to understand what’s happening.
Heather Cox Richardson, tonight: “The First Continental Congress, which met in 1774, refused to establish a standing army, afraid that a bad government could use an army against its people.”
And here we are, 250 years later.
Yes, and here we are…
